As the world celebrates Earth Day on 22nd April, it's the perfect time to shine a spotlight on Brean's remarkable journey towards sustainability. Nestled along the Somerset coastline, Brean Leisure Park and Holiday Resort Unity work towards a greener, more sustainable future. From increasing biodiversity to cutting down on plastic waste and embracing renewable energy, let's learn more about Brean's commitment to protecting our planet.

Embracing Biodiversity

Brean takes pride in its natural beauty, and preserving biodiversity is at the heart of its mission. The Secret Wood, a hidden gem within the resort, serves as a sanctuary for a diverse array of wildlife. From bustling ponds teeming with life to a variety of bird species, Brean's ecosystem thrives thanks to dedicated conservation efforts. Through partnerships with organisations like Secret World, Brean not only provides a safe environment for wildlife but also contributes to vital conservation efforts.

Last year's sightings of tadpoles, sticklebacks, and water beetles in our ponds were a testament to our commitment to nurturing local ecosystems. Moreover, the recent release of crucian carp by the Environmental Agency highlights our dedication to preserving endangered species and their habitats.

Tackling Plastic Pollution

Plastic pollution poses a significant threat to our environment, and here in Brean we are taking proactive steps to combat this issue. By eliminating single-use plastic items and embracing reusable alternatives, Holiday Resort Unity and Brean Leisure Resort are making significant steps towards plastic-free holidays. From swapping plastic to fabric laundry bags and reusable swim nappies at Brean Splash, every action counts in our collective effort to reduce plastic waste.

Thanks to partnerships with Plastic Free Communities, banned single-use plastic items have been replaced with eco-friendly alternatives across the resort. Additionally, the availability of reusable cups at the supermarket not only reduces plastic waste but also encourages guests to embrace sustainable practices in their daily lives.

Harnessing Renewable Energy

Reducing energy consumption and embracing renewable sources are paramount in Brean's sustainability journey. By investing in solar panels and upgrading energy management systems, the resort is making significant steps towards a greener energy future. The sun-soaked coastline is great for a traditional English holiday but also provides the perfect conditions to use solar energy, with existing solar panels generating substantial electricity each year.

Furthermore, we are constantly trying to reduce our energy consumption with real-time tracking systems. From upgrading swimming pool air handling units to commissioning additional solar panels across the resort, every initiative brings us closer to our goal of minimising our environmental footprint.

Supporting Local Communities

While we are sourcing Fairtrade bananas and Cocoa Alliance certified chocolate in order to support ethical sourcing and global sustainability goals, our commitment to sustainability is focused on supporting local communities and economies. Through partnerships with regional food and drink producers, the resort prioritises sourcing locally whenever possible. Whether it's fresh produce from nearby gardens or artisanal cider from local farms, we are committed to support local Somerset businesses.

Moreover, each year we raise charity for the local organisations, and 2024 charity is dedicated to BARB – Burnham Area Rescue Boats.

Looking Ahead

As we celebrate Earth Day, Brean Leisure Park and Holiday Resort Unity stand as a shining example of what's possible when communities come together to protect our planet. From increasing biodiversity to reducing plastic waste and embracing renewable energy, every action brings us one step closer to a more sustainable future.

As we look ahead, let's continue to support initiatives that prioritise the well-being of our planet. Together, we can create a brighter, greener future for generations to come!
