On May 20th, we celebrate World Bee Day, a vital occasion to honour and recognise the indispensable role bees play in our ecosystem. As a BBKA bee-friendly resort, we are proud to nurture six beehives, home to an estimated 30,000 bees. Our dedication to protecting these remarkable pollinators is unwavering, and it is a cause that resonates deeply with our community and our values.

Meet Our Beekeeper Patrick

The heart of our bee-friendly initiative is our dedicated beekeeper, Patrick. With his expert care, Patrick ensures the health and vitality of our bees through regular maintenance and essential checks. His work is crucial in preserving our beehives, which are not just a part of our resort but a cornerstone of our commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

The Vital Role of Bees in Our Ecosystem

Bees are much more than just honey producers; they are key players in the balance of our ecosystem. The impact of bees is colossal, with nearly 90% of the world’s wild flowering plant species depending, entirely or in part, on animal pollination. Moreover, over 75% of the world’s food crops and 35% of global agricultural land are dependent on these industrious insects. In simple terms, our food security and biodiversity are linked to the survival of bees.

Threats to Bees and Our Response

Despite their importance, bees and other pollinators face significant threats from human activities, including habitat destruction, pesticide use, and climate change. Recognising these challenges, we have implemented several initiatives to support the future of bees:

Planting Bee-Friendly Wildflowers: We have cultivated a variety of wildflowers around our resort to provide bees with a diverse and abundant source of food. This not only aids in their nourishment but also enhances the natural beauty of our surroundings.

Avoiding Pesticides: We prioritise natural pest control methods and avoid using harmful pesticides that can adversely affect bee populations. Our approach ensures a safer and more sustainable environment for all pollinators.

Selling Our Honey: By selling our delicious, locally-produced honey on-site at an affordable price, we spread awareness about bees among our holiday home owners, guests, and employees. Each jar of honey is a testament to the hard work of our bees and a small step towards appreciating their vital contributions. If you want to help us protecting bees, you can purchase a jar of honey in the reception at HRU and Brean Country Club.

Our Commitment to a Brighter Future

World Bee Day is more than a celebration; it is a call to action. We aim to raise awareness about the importance of bees to our society and underscore our commitment to their preservation. By fostering a bee-friendly environment, we contribute to the global effort to ensure a sustainable future for these essential pollinators.

As we mark this important day, we invite you to join us in our efforts. Whether it's by planting a bee-friendly garden, reducing pesticide use, or simply appreciating the incredible work of bees, every action counts. Together, we can make a difference and secure a thriving ecosystem for generations to come.

Happy World Bee Day! Let’s celebrate and protect our buzzing friends. 🐝🌸
